The History of Martial Arts Taught at Our Academy

Karate
Originating in Okinawa, Japan, karate developed from traditional martial arts like Shuri-te and Naha-te in the early 20th century. It was shaped by Chinese influence and emphasized striking, blocking, and kata (forms). The word “karate” means “empty hand,” signifying a focus on hand-to-hand combat. It became globally popular after being introduced to mainland Japan by Gichin Funakoshi in the 1920s, and today it is practiced as both a sport and a self-defense discipline.

Kickboxing
Kickboxing is a modern martial art that blends traditional karate, Muay Thai, and Western boxing. Developed in the 1960s and 1970s in Japan and the United States, it was created to allow full-contact competition while maintaining the striking techniques of karate and boxing. Over time, kickboxing has evolved into various styles such as K1, full-contact, and low-kick competitions, becoming a popular combat sport worldwide.

Boxing
Dating back to ancient Greece, boxing has evolved from a form of hand-to-hand combat in the Olympic Games to a modern sport that focuses on punches and footwork. The current form of boxing, with gloves and a ring, was formalized in the 19th century in England. Known for its focus on striking, endurance, and defensive techniques, boxing remains one of the most prominent and respected martial arts worldwide.

Muay Thai
Muay Thai, often called the “Art of Eight Limbs,” is a striking martial art from Thailand that utilizes punches, kicks, elbows, and knees. It has ancient roots, tracing back to traditional Thai martial arts used in warfare. Over centuries, it evolved into a formalized sport practiced with a set of rules for competitions. Muay Thai is renowned for its devastating power and is used in both sport and self-defense, with significant influence on other striking martial arts.

Urban Combat
Urban Combat is a practical, modern combat discipline designed for close-quarters and self-defense situations, especially in urban environments. It draws on various martial arts, including boxing, Muay Thai, Krav Maga, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and military techniques, to prepare practitioners for real-world encounters. Developed for personal safety and counter-terrorism operations, it emphasizes efficiency, adaptability, and survival skills in unpredictable, confined spaces.
